1. HISTORY OF THE AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG
The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in the 1800s to help settlers manage large herds over long distances. Early herding dogs from Britain could not cope with Australia’s heat and rugged terrain, so breeders crossed them with the native Dingo for toughness. Later, Collies and Dalmatians were added to refine the breed’s stamina and loyalty.
The result was a resilient, intelligent and strong dog capable of driving cattle over long distances. Today, the Australian Cattle Dog remains a favourite among farmers and ranchers while also being loved as a loyal pet.
2. APPEARANCE
The Australian Cattle Dog is medium-sized, muscular and compact. Adults stand 43 to 51 centimetres tall and weigh between 18 and 25 kilograms.
Its short, dense double coat is weather-resistant and comes in two classic colours: blue or red speckle, often with darker markings on the head. The head is broad with upright, pointed ears and dark oval eyes that show alertness and intelligence. The tail is moderately long and slightly curved, carried low when relaxed.
